阿汤哥的这部新片表现了一部爆米花片能够无聊到什么程度。
古埃及的异域风情、木乃伊的神秘氛围，曾经都不乏受欢迎的故事改编。《新木乃伊》本身就是环球重启怪兽电影系列的第一部。2000 年代斯蒂芬·索莫斯执导，道恩·强森、布兰登·费舍主演的《木乃伊》三部曲，以 3 亿美元成本，拿到了全球 14 亿美元票房，其中第一部也取得了不错的口碑。
《新木乃伊》或许是为了刻意与《木乃伊》有所不同，尽管开头是从沙漠起步，但实际上把故事发生地整个挪到了现代的伦敦。当然用场景地的迁移来营造所谓的“格局”感，是好莱坞大片最擅长使用的伎俩。在合适的处理中，这的确能够为观众带来新鲜感——例如《奇异博士》在魔法作用下折叠成异度空间的伦敦。

最致命的是，木乃伊大 boss 完全沦为了阿汤哥的陪衬品，毫无魅力。索菲亚·宝特拉《王牌特工：特工学院》里的“刀锋女”光芒四射，但在这部里的古埃及公主，就像是恐怖情色片里蹩脚的木乃伊 coser，只能说妆化得比较用心。
