二战前的布达佩斯，餐馆老板拉西娄，钢琴师安德拉许，还有美丽的伊洛娜，在那间小小的餐馆中上演出一起爱恨情仇。拉西娄和安德拉许同时深爱着伊洛娜，甚至心甘情愿的分享她的感情。三角形是最稳定的，可通常三角的恋爱是最容易生事的。奇怪的是，剧中的三人却能保持一种微妙的平衡。满心爱慕所驱使的安德拉许为伊洛娜谱了首钢琴曲，取名为“Gloomy Sunday”，在拉西娄的帮忙下，曲子被出版了，安德拉许随着曲子一举成名。随着二战到来，德国军官汉斯魏克德出现，所有人都被越来越深德卷进漩涡，谁也无法逃脱命运，所留下的，可能只有“Gloomy Sunday”永恒的魔力。
在剧中，“Gloomy Sunday”造成了无数的自杀事件，有餐馆的客人也有唱片的听众。最终的安德拉许和拉西娄都无法逃脱“Gloomy Sunday”。在对伊洛娜的爱中所写下曲子，竟然透露的全是忧伤信息。或许，从一开始安德拉许对伊洛娜就是爱与绝望交织的。他和拉西娄谁也无法得到全部的伊洛娜，三人微妙的平衡中，每个人都有着深深的心结。音乐本身没有魔力，而人的心魔才是最可怕的。“Gloomy Sunday”的曲调动听，而人心中那些无法抑止的悲哀将一个又一个人送上了绝路。随着德国的侵略越演越甚，眼看着伊洛娜也被卷入其中，为了他们的餐馆去求汉斯时，充满了无奈的安德拉许最后一次弹奏完，也是第一次为伊洛娜伴奏了“Gloomy Sunday”后举枪自尽。而拉西娄身为犹太人，更加无法逃脱法西斯的追捕。说他真正听懂了“Gloomy Sunday”，或者说“Gloomy Sunday”的忧伤真好符合了他对现实的绝望。而他连体面自尽的机会都没有就被送入了集中营，不知所终。汉斯开始的出现不过是爱慕伊洛娜的一名德国商人。到了战时，他仍然已朋友的身份在三人中间，可是形势的越来越糟糕，汉斯冷酷自私的本性逐渐暴露，他是个彻底商人，就算最深的对伊洛娜的感情，也不过是种占有欲而已。最后，在他80岁那天，他回到布达佩斯，重温肉卷和“Gloomy Sunday”，也倒在伊洛娜的毒药中，很快意的一个结局。
伊洛娜，做为剧中的灵魂人物，确实很美，美的值得那么多男人为她倾倒。开始她处于两个男人中间，无法割舍任何一个。可是战争带走了一个又一个，最终只空留她一人。伊洛娜是个女人，女人会有着无法割舍的依恋，女人会为爱人奋不顾身，也或许只有女人才能把爱恨情仇放在心中，几十年不变。爱能铭心，恨也能刻骨，纠缠不清的爱与恨，才是“Gloomy Sunday”最后的传奇。
