黄秋霞与林国荣是一对真心相爱，并已珠胎暗结，可惜他们的良缘遭到林母的反对，一对薄命鸳鸯被无情拆散。林国荣在母亲的压力下，另娶妻子娟娟，但娟娟经医检确定不能生育。为了延续林家香火，林母软硬兼施，要回了秋霞含辛茹苦养育的儿子志强。幼小的志强到林家后，因思念母亲偷跑回家，被风吹雨淋，高烧不退昏迷不醒。秋霞误以为志强已死，伤心过度神经错乱，被送进了疗养院。十八年后，志强来到了疗养院工作，意外地见到了生母，当他唱起幼时的儿歌，秋霞竟奇迹般的恢复了正常，母子终于团聚。（这是在网上找的一段介绍，不知是记忆失真还是怎么回事，印象中好像不是这样的。）
母亲被迫与相依为命的儿子分离，变成了疯子。这部80年代放映的台湾电影让观众们哭湿了一块块手绢，母子分离那刻， “世上只有妈妈好”的歌声响起，银幕上下一片号啕声。据说此片让观众第一次有了进电影院带手绢的准备。
就故事内容而言，《妈妈再爱我一次》是台、港通俗影视产品中最典型的家庭伦理大悲剧，在50和60年代，类似剧情的影片不断被搬演，也的确曾经感动过不少观众。但近20年，这类影片已被视为“老套”而很少有人拍摄，纵使偶有这类作品推出，也是反应冷淡收场。事实上，就在此片在台湾推出公映的同一年，台湾另一家制片公司也拍摄了由陈荣树导演的同类型影片《妈妈带我回家》，结果两部影片同样得不到台湾观众的重视，映了几天便静悄悄下片了，在海外市场更连公映的机会都没有。不料失之东隅收之桑榆，两年之后，《妈妈再爱我一次》渡海扬威，竟在大陆上以黑马姿态造成空前轰动。
