作为“理想社会”的代名词，“乌托邦”源于十六世纪英国学者托马斯·摩尔的同名着作。在那本书中，摩尔虚构了一个拥有完美社会体制的小岛，不但废除私有制，而且实现了人人平等。在理想制度的保护下，小岛上的居民充分享受自由。现实社会中的贫困与罪恶也不存在于这个小岛。正当英国民众对政坛红人摩尔充满希望时，他却被好友亨利八世处决。
摩尔去世后，他的理想社会理念留存了下来。一批社会实践者决定建立自己的乌托邦。英国商人罗伯特·欧文在美国建立了一个实验性公社。然而，这个废除了私有制的公社在两年后失败。如果考察公社的经济基础，它的失败并不奇怪。两年的时间里，公社并没有什么实质性的产出，主要依靠欧文自己的财产。这笔财富是欧文在英国的棉纺工厂赚来的。可以说，这个公社的经济基础正是乌托邦理念所反对的东西：工厂中的雇佣制、棉花地里的奴隶制、国际贸易中的殖民主义。公社的失败在一开始就不可避免。
20世纪，“乌托邦”理想作为对资本的反击，再次复活。苏联在国家层面上进行了一次更为宏大的社会实验，用计划经济全面取代市场经济。但也是在苏联的巅峰年代，反乌托邦理念抬头。乔治·奥威尔创作的《动物农场》中，同样用动物来寓言政治。领导革命的猪们掌握了权力。于是，原本朝着平等目标进发的动物农场衍生出新的等级。正如《动物农场》的预言，苏联的行政渐渐官僚化，经济也一步步僵化。苏联最终解体。
《疯狂动物园》中的“动物托邦”也是一个理想化的城市。所有动物不分种族的生活在一起，每个动物都能成为它想成为的样子。但随着剧情的进行，观众会发现“动物托邦”只是概念上的理想，远非现实。“动物托邦”究竟是鼓励性的“乌托邦”，还是讽刺性的“反乌托邦”，这是从电影名字开始就已经在探索的第一重内涵。
2. 成人爱童话
《疯狂的动物园》并没有停留在“乌托邦”这样的抽象概念上。电影从一开始，就刻意影射现实。在最典型的一个桥段中，兔子急着到交通局查车牌号，交通局的办事人员却都是些行动迟缓的树懒。小朋友们看到银幕上的憨厚树懒开心得哈哈大笑，但成人观众脸上全是苦笑：生活中拖沓的行政流程，大概比树懒还要差劲。电影中的'物种冲突，也对应美国当下的种族冲突。动物城中处处有物种偏见：兔子不适合做警察，狐狸都是骗子，食草动物软弱，食肉动物残暴…… 同样，美国也存在严重的种族偏见，总统候选人的川普就毫不掩饰自己的种族主义态度。可以说，《疯狂的动物园》是一则关于现实的寓言。
寓言号称“成人的童话”，往往用比喻来描述社会和人性。中国古典名着《西游记》表面上是一个神怪故事，但内在同样是一个寓言。猴王独立而能干，敢于大闹天宫，推翻天庭秩序，经常被后世看做造反精神的一个体现。猪八戒不但懒惰怯懦，且贪于女色，象征人性的弱点。寓言的间接比喻就像是留给读者的一个小谜题，任由读者自行发挥。就讽刺现实的目的来说，寓言更能网罗听众，其笑眯眯的讽刺效果反而好于直接抨击。
但作为一则寓言，《疯狂动物城》最想反对的，是寓言中常见的脸谱化解读，比如狮子代表统治者、狐狸意味着狡猾。随着剧情的发展，动物的真实性格总是背离对应的传统脸谱。本应胆小的兔子却勇敢热血，本应狡猾的狐狸却善良真诚。体形渺小的动物成了黑帮老大，体形硕大的动物却是小马仔。片中的大反派更是出人意表。用寓言来解读现实，用反脸谱来反对种族主义，是电影的第二重深意。
3. 文化改变世界
在电影的最后，重归和平的动物城举行了一场演唱会。超级巨星羚羊在台上唱了一首“尝试一切”(Try Everything)。这首歌正符合画外音在说明的电影主题：每种动物都有缺陷，但这不应是物种间的鸿沟。想要跨越物种差异，唯一的办法是努力尝试，不放弃交流。伴随着音乐，不同动物在舞台下携手起舞。迪斯尼电影标志性的欢乐嘉年华气氛终于在这场一夜狂欢中回归。导演选择了文化性的歌手来作为消弭裂痕的最终手段，看似牵强，实则已有先例。
1960年代，由于种族冲突、女权运动和越战等问题，美国社会陷入分裂。正当大众对前途感到迷茫时，披头士乐队的主唱约翰·列侬更是以和平主义代言人的身份，直接介入美国的主流文化。他的《给和平一个机会》被看做是反战的圣歌。超过十万的学生聚集在华盛顿，高声齐唱：
All we are saying is give peace a chance
(我们说给和平一个机会)
这次反战运动让尼克松政府压力巨大，最终促成了美国从越南战场的撤军。列侬的歌无疑是民间运动的产物，但它又反过来进一步促进了反战运动，成为软文化改变硬世界的一个案例。列侬的文化力量是借着现代的传媒手段获得的。《疯狂动物城》中的羚羊，是动画世界的列侬，代表了动物们跨越物种偏见的希望。
同样，迪士尼在美国大选年推出一部寓言色彩浓烈的《疯狂动物城》，用意并不简单。现在的美国正如六十年代，面临着严重的分裂危机。恐怖袭击异化了阿拉伯裔族群，经济衰退导致外来移民饱受攻讦。川普在大选中的嚣张，更让少数族裔感到惶恐。在这样的环境下，抱着“种族融合”理念的《疯狂动物园》走上银屏，就像污浊中的一股清风。至于《疯狂动物城》能否成为一个改变世界的文化图腾，是我期待在未来解读的第三重内涵。

The doctor emerges from his tent and says something to Shang, who looks disturbed and rushes inside. He looks at Mulan, who sits up in bed, her side bandaged. Shang stares at her, recognizing her as a girl. Mulan realizes her mistake and pulls the blanket back on.
Mulan:
I can explain!
Chi Fu:
So it's true!
Mulan:
Shang!
Chi Fu:
[yanking Mulan out of the tent and pulling her hair out of a bun] I knew there was something wrong with you! A woman! Treacherous snake!
Mulan:
My name is Mulan. I did it to save my father!
Chi Fu:
High treason!
Mulan:
I didn't mean for it to go this far!
Chi Fu:
Ultimate dishonor!
Mulan:
It was the only way! Please, believe me!

Shang walks over to Khan and takes out Mulan's sword. The Gang of Three start to rush over to her, but Chi Fu stops them.
Chi Fu:
[to the soldiers holding Khan] Restrain him. [to the Gang of Three] You know the law.
Shang walks over to Mulan and throws the sword in the snow in front of her.
Shang:
A life for a life. My debt is repaid. [to the soldiers] Move out!
Chi Fu:
But you can't just ...
Shang:
[to Chi Fu] I said, 'Move out.'
The Chinese Army sadly walks away, leaving Mulan, Mushu, and Khan in the snow.

What? There are no council positions open, your Majesty!
Emperor:
Very well. You can have his job.
