我在非完全主动的情况下在北京最好的电影院里看完了《角斗士》。所谓非主动观赏，完全在于我对这类影片题材的不感冒，确切讲，是有心理障碍。无论是十几年前看的《斯巴达克思》，还是更早的、在奥斯卡电影史上永留青名、我却至今没看过的《宾虚》。所有描写古罗马时期奴隶生活或以此为背景的影片我都不看。因为我受不了那种野蛮血腥的色调。不知道为什么，也不知道从什么时候开始，所有这类影片在我心里都是一种昏黄的、压抑的、毫无希望的色调。也许你在片中看不到血，但那种压迫会时时追随着你。在一片烟尘火色中，人与人毫无选择的角斗。那里象是永远也见不到自由的阳光的。而在看完这部影片后我发现，我看到的都是美国人的古罗马，我从不知道，罗马人眼里的古罗马是什么样的。
随着电影科技的成熟，你不能不承认《角斗士》这部影片较以前的可看性要强，要更成熟和完美。但你也不得不感受更多更浓烈的美国味。
尽管主人公将军是个西班牙农民，整天念叨着打完仗该回家收麦子了，而且数得出离开家的时间，但他对待士兵、对待爱他的公主、对待把他当儿子一样看待的恺撒的态度，以及对家中妻儿的思念都是美国式的人性——其实这种处理方式本身就是美国式的。
恺撒残忍的儿子继位后为讨好人民而举行庆典，在大竞技场里观看角斗士角斗。多象美国的大选呀。角斗士的主人对主人公马克西莫司说：赢得人民就是赢得自由。套在美国大选里不就是：赢得人民就是赢得选票吗。
还有政治，我不了解那时的政治是什么样的，但影片里的种种斗争和手段，甚至种种情节转化都是熟悉的，因为那是在很多美国片中常常看到的。
因为勇敢、智慧和善良而被公主爱，因为勇敢、智慧和善良而即使在角斗士的队伍里也被拥戴为首领，有人甘愿为他牺牲，甚至连一个8岁的孩子（偏巧他还是公主的儿子）也会一眼识别他的与众不同甚至崇拜他到希望长大成为角斗士。
但英雄是必须要死的，这样才符合美国式是真实。但死也要在伸张了正义后，尽管是从一个西班牙农民的复仇升华为为拯救古罗马而必须要伸张的正义。所以，即使身遭暗算，也会凭借一股“血战到底”的精神——一定是精神——战到最后，替人民赢得胜利，也为自己。然后，光荣而满足的死去，并得到民族英雄般的厚葬。
而且，曾经因为时世所迫背叛过他的部下，也往往会在最后、最紧要的关头助一臂之力。
这一切，你是不是特别熟悉呢？

梦工厂的技术和艺术制造出的很多镜头是相当完美的，比如片中反复出现的马克西莫司濒死状态下，存在他潜意识里的美丽家乡和可爱妻儿，象云一样流动的镜头和灰蓝的色调就是一个完美的梦。可除了这些呢？
好莱坞喜欢用远离现实的东西来赚钱，从距离上远到太空远到外星球；从时间上远到人类文明的初始；从体裁上远到动画——美国的叫卡通，全是卡通的卡通和真人与卡通混合的卡通。尤其是拿别人的事说山，反正大部分都不是自己的，怎么糟改都不会跳出个元老院来反对。更因为不是自家的事，糟改过分了也不会留下千古恶名，被历史和后人唾骂。年轻是件多轻松的事啊。
我承认自己是个喜欢逃避的人，逃避各种感官痛苦（只有感官痛苦我还能选择逃避），所以我喜欢描写19世纪上流社会的电影，那已经是文明和平和的时代。我喜欢看鲜艳的色彩，看温和的对话，看浪漫伤感的情感生活。所以我喜欢所有奥斯汀的作品，喜欢《秋日传奇》，喜欢《看得见风景的房间》，我看得懂那种味道。但我不知道《角斗士》想让我明白什么？我知道的是，我不喜欢美国的古罗马。
