It is an interesting film although some people may think this film doesn』t have important significance. The film tells a story happened in Japan and related to Ramen. Abby came to Japan to live with her boyfriend, however, the boy left her alone in Tokyo. Poor Abby felt so sad and went to a Ramen restaurant in a rainy night. She met a kind couple and got a bowl of Ramen which made her feel happy. And then she decided to learn to cook ramen. The sensei was so serious that Abby felt frustrated at the beginning. But Abby did not give up and tried her best to learn how to make the soup for the ramen. During the period in Tokyo, Abby met another Japanese boy who later became her boyfriend but the Japanese boy went to Shanghai. Abby cooked her first soup created her own ramen but sensei said she did not use her spirit. After visiting sensei』s grandma Abby got to know the soup should be cooked with pure love and could be started with tears. She cooked again and all the customers cried after tasting her ramen because the ramen reminded them of their love and past. Although she has not passed the test of grand master of ramen, she still became sensei』s successor. When she came back to U.S, she opened her own Ramen restaurant. At the end of film, her Japanese boyfriend went to the Ramen restaurant to find Abby and told her that he had quit his job in Shanghai and decided to learn music which was his dream.
As a Chinese student, I』m very interested in how Japanese people think of American. From this movie, Abby is a representative American girl and her Japanese boyfriend is a representative Japanese. Abby insisted that everyone should be loyal to be self but her boyfriend thought people should obey to their job and their responsibility. She looked like an 「impossible girl」 as her sensei said, but she had the precious courage and determination that helped her achieve her goal. The film also showed the process of making ramen. The sensei always talked about the spirit which determined the taste of ramen soup. It seems that the most important thing of ramen is the soup rather than the noodle. Besides ramen, we can also learn Japanese like to emphasize the importance of spirit, such as the traditional Bushido. Abby created her own American style ramen which was composed of pepper and tomato, reflecting that American has a strong ability of innovation. It is obvious that American are not as serious as Japanese in the movie. Japanese people have many rules to follow, however, America is a country named of FREEDOM, deciding the difference of them. Not only in Japanese films, but also in some British films, Americans are usually portrayed as free people who don』t know the rules. Although this film is happened in Japan, the story is all about American girl and I think it is the reason why American audience did not appreciate it. Because people always want to know something they feel unfamiliar. But I enjoyed the film very much from the third perspective and found something really interesting.
