It was just sooooo great! So much fun, too!! It's like every high school musical theater junkie's dream. Everyone was just excellent and the directing was superb. And I love the message this movie sends to young minds, that you explore other facets of expression other than the one that's socially acceptable. And I love the little undertones and subtleties throughout the film. And I love how all the tough mean hard guys are CLEARLY dancers in real life. I was muy impressed!! Everything and everyone was perfect. From the clothes, casting, choreography, sets.... it all looks like a dream. And in beautiful clear New Mexico. Who could want anything more!

I have seen this movie easily a half a dozen times, and I find that the beauty of the film is how Forrest Gump not only shares his innocence and purity with others, including the audience, he also manages to retain that innocence and purity through some very difficult times. As a Viet Nam veteran, and a college graate of the late Sixties, I could of course personally relate to the various periods that Forrest Gump enres. I would only mention that the skillful and seamless blending of music, action, and period costume was enthralling. And yet it was so perfectly understated that Forrest Gump's travels through thirty five years of the stormiest and most meaningful years of American history only became clearly defined for the viewer. Even more so than the well known chocolates quote as a metaphor for life, I felt that the remark that stupid is what you do is probably more workable for most of us.

The folks who actually like this movie are the reason Hollywood makes very few quality movies any more. If you don't care then why should they? This movie is so bad from the beginning. Numerous tornadoes pummeling a West Coast city and there are actually people flying in helicopters to get a closer look. That's a brainy idea. Buildings freezing and crumbling yet the people outside don't seem to be affected so much. The "walk" from Philadelphia to New York? And in record time no less. I do like the fact that they had the foresight to have Antarctic weather gear handy for just these occasions. What of the tent that was able to withstand the chill but not the Empire State building? Call your local Army Navy store....they really need to stock these tents. I also found it amazing that any lines of communications were not really affected, including the under freezing water pay phone. The only ones who had communications losses were, of course, the main characters.....ah drama!! I know they were in a library but you think they could have possibly tried to burn all the wooden tables and chairs around them? Seems that they would burn warmer and for longer than books. The acting was horrific, the directing was terrible, the script was unbelievably bad and the special effects were anything but special. It certainly rates up there with Godzilla 2000 and Armageddon......it actually makes Independence Day look like one of the all time greats!

I remember seeing this movie for the first time in late 2003, and I was impressed. I saw it again last night, and I was even more impressed. The acting is amazing, and the ending was brilliant. For me, all my guesses were incorrect. Everything that happens in this movie in unpredicted. The last half hour itself was highly unpredictable, and it had a powerful message. When a scene was meant to be dramatic, they did a great job at it. I don't know about everybody else, but the ending did make me cry. The message the movie sent kept me thinking for a while. The amount of courage and bravery was inconceivable, there was barely any faults or anything wrong with the movie. For a movie of 1995, they did a great job.
I absolutely guarantee this movie to anybody who enjoys action and war with a bit of drama mixed in. One of the best, or maybe even the best movie of the 20th century.

I thought this movie was very well done. It is an overlooked treasure. Ron Howard is a great film maker and he deserves more credit for this film. I'm a huge Ron Howard fan and I felt that this film was no better than any of his work done thus far. The dialog was a bit hard to understand, but the plot, acting and directing are what make the movie so great. Nicole Kidman is so beautiful in the movie and she really carries the movie with her charisma. Tom Cruise plays his part very well. The scenery in the movie is some of the best I've ever seen. It is easy to lose yourself in this movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone I know.

This is the type of a film that's never boring no matter how often you watch it. It deserved every single award it got. It's touching, it's timeless and it's downright beautiful. I'm not a huge friend of extended versions because there's usually a perfectly good reason to take something out of the film and none whatsoever to put it back again, if pleasing hardcore fans isn't a good reason - that's totally a matter of opinion. However, "Dances with wolves" is certainly an exception.
The nearly four hour version is the only one to be. Sure it sounds like it's too much but when you watch the movie it doesn't look a minute overlong and cutting even a second out of it would seem like a horrible crime. The original theater version was 52 minutes shorter which sound too cruel to be true. I mean really, what's there to cut? If you haven't seen "Dances with wolves" yet you have missed one of the greatest motion picture experiences of the 90's and you should do something about it instantly.

pearl harbour film review
Pearl Harbor consists of three incongruous acts, mashed together into an ungainly whole. It appears to be more interested in reprocing the success of Titanic, which also set a fictional love story amidst a tragic historical event, than it is in telling the story of the men and women who fought and died in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Titanic worked because the central characters were interesting, the story was cohesive, the historical events were handled respectfully and with the proper dramatic tone, and underneath it all was an intelligent reflection on the human failings that permitted such a tragedy in the first place.
Pearl Harbor reces the historical backdrop into a series of action set pieces. Instead of exploring ideas inherent in the events, it extracts them, recing the reason for Japan's attack to something inexplicable at best, and having utterly nothing to say about why the attack happened, how it was carried out, or how we responded. The film is dedicated to the men who died at Pearl Harbor, but what does it dedicate to them? It does not seem very interested in them except as a tool for dramatic imagery. Consider, for example, a scene in which we learn that men are trapped in a sunken ship in the harbor. We learn this to emphasize the brutality of the attack, as if such emphasis were needed. Then the film forgets this point entirely, providing the fates of those men in a narrated line just before the closing credits. Why wasn't the third act of the film about those men, instead of a rushed covering of the Doolittle raid on Tokyo, complete with overblown crash landings and an improbable engagement with Japanese soldiers?
If you want to see a real movie about Pearl Harbor or the Doolittle Raid, one that paints a deep and accurate picture of what it was like, one you can learn from, one that pays tribute to our veterans, or even just one that functions as convincing entertainment, there is no shortage of options. Tora! Tora! Tora! chronicles the events before, ring, and after the attack from both the American and Japanese sides. Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo is as thorough a chronicle of the Doolittle Raid as is probably possible in a feature film, while also following the personal stories of a few indivials involved (any one of which is more interesting than the personal story in Pearl Harbor). The Purple Heart, one of the most heartbreaking movies I've ever seen, tells the story of Americans captured by the Japanese after the raid.
Writing off the historical aspects of the film, I am left with the love triangle that makes up the entire first act and pervades the rest of it. It is wholly uninteresting. This same story has been told better, countless times before. Not one of the three characters is fleshed out into an indivial: they are bland stereotypes, dolled up to look pretty and given trite lines that they recite to convey the illusion of genuine emotion. It's telling that it doesn't much matter to us how the love triangle is resolved. Unless they both die, she'll get one of them, and who cares which? Neither of the men are personable, and we surely suspect early on that her decision will be based more on fate than her own volition anyway. (In plots like this, it's survival of the survivors.) And so, alas, we are denied even the most basic of all elements of storytelling, namely, characters making actual decisions

Robert Zemeckis (of Back to the Future fame) has collected another feather for his cap with his direction of this movie starring Tom Hanks as this childishly naive idiot savant. Though that description of Forrest Gump might be inadequate.
Gump, gifted with a low IQ which lets him be adorably childlike even as he grows up, leads a very charmed life: a mother who loves him immensely and who sleeps with the school principal in order to make sure her child has the best ecation, a miraculous incident that eliminates the need for him to have braces for his legs, a childhood girlfriend who remains faithful to him till the end, surviving Vietnam with a medal, and, in general, a propensity for turning everything that happens to him into good.
I wonder what the movie is trying to say. From one perspective, it implies that intelligence (as measured by IQs and the general idea of what "smart" is) is a very unnecessary trait. But I think one can look beyond that and say that childlike innocence, which can be considered stupid, has its rewards. Throughout the movie, Gump is in situations where he is harassed by other people but he never takes offense (except, of course, when his girl Jenny is being abused) at any of the insults thrown at him. He is indeed not completely stupid, even though he is portrayed as such, since he can re-assemble guns at high speed, run like crazy, play ping-pong like a maniac, and so on.
The fact that Gump doesn't take offense, I think, is what keeps him content. He becomes a millionaire, but gives most of the money away. He is honest and open and this, along with his Alabama accent, endears him to the audience. But this gets tiresome after a while (especially after 2 hours). I thought the movie was overly long, but that's the only negative thing I have to say.
Gump rubs elbows with many famous personalities over the last half of the century including Elvis Presley and Nixon, thanks to computer technology (General Dan doesn't really lose his legs either---they are just erased and the background is then touched up by using computer graphics programs). The account of how Gump is responsible for the gyrations that is so characteristic of Presley is very telling of the motives of this movie. Gump is contrasted to the famous males, who are idols (in some cases) in today's society, and it appears as though he is better off in comparison: Gump's choices in life seem to determine his niceness (he goes to Vietnam, keeps his promises ("a promise is a promise"), harbours no ill-feelings or grudges, and is not greedy with fame or money) and successes. Contrast this to the choices his lifetime girl friend Jenny makes: she wants to be famous and rich, but ends up being a druggie. The people she is surrounded by are all of a bious nature: a sexually-abusive father, a show audience more interested in her naked body than her folk-music playing, and an abusive hippie-boyfriend.
The traditional male heroes that we have had are all dysfunctional in some respect or another and we are lost without heroes, as Bloom points out. Gump is a new kind of a role-model; he's A Nice Boy and everyone knows they're hard to find. As one reviewer said: "Today the last American hero is a Tom Hanks character with a small IQ".
Forrest Gump is the runaway hit movie of this summer. Many people claim it gets them in touch with their "inner child". Some reviewers attack it for the view that low IQ is a necessity for maintaining the child-like attitude Gump has. Gump never grows up or matures in the movie. He never becomes a man and remains a boy throughout. It is implied, at least, that his "stupidity" is what allows him to do this. This may or may not be true, but it is just a movie in the end. Most people in his position would not be so fortunate as he. And what about the converse: if you are intelligent, does this mean you cannot be child-like forever? That's not true, and I think Zemeckis did a good job in showing that anyone can retain their inner child as long they never grow up or become mature.
There's room for much analysis here, but the plot isn't new. Peter Sellers did this a long time ago.

1995年的第六十七屆奧斯卡金像獎最佳影片的角逐中，影片《阿甘正傳》一舉獲得了最佳影片、最佳男主角、最佳導演、最佳改編劇本、最佳剪輯和最佳視覺效果等六項大獎。影片通過對一個存在智力障礙者生活的描述反映了美國生活的方方面面，從一個獨特的角度對美國幾十年來社會政治生活中的重要事件作了展現。影片改編自溫斯頓·格魯姆的同名小說。只不過原著是一本充滿了諷刺意味的荒誕小說，而影片則對故事進行了修飾和美化。摒棄了原著的荒誕和揭露諷刺意味，為影片增添了一種溫情。這無疑使影片更合觀眾和評委的口味，但卻犧牲了原著的叛逆斗爭精神，使影片成為了一種理想化道德的象徵。
阿甘在影片中被塑造成了美德的化身，誠實、守信、認真、勇敢而重視感情。在影片中，阿甘是十分純潔的形象，而珍妮則成了墮落的象徵。這與原著有著極大的出入。對於所敘述的一切，影片自始自終都是以一種溫情和善意的態度來表現的，甚至還加入了詩意化的成分，這使得影片顯得柔和而無傷害性。影片對傳統道德觀念的宣揚和體現。使影片變得易為人們所接受，導演高超的編排技巧和電影語言的運用也使影片十分吸引人。影片的內容為影片商業上的成功提供了保證，而導演藝術上的處理也使得影片更加精彩，這就是影片成功的原因所在。《阿甘正傳》成了美國當年最為賣座的電影之一。

《危情時速》：另一種形式的豐滿
動作片上映，尤其是特尼-斯科特這種擅長拍攝速度感極強的動作片的導演的作品，通常都被扣上「劇情單薄」的帽子。其實，類型片總有類型化後的目的，就實現目的的程度來看，《危情時速》的劇本可算是豐滿至極。誠然，在兩列火車會車、1206火車頭與777車位銜接、列車通過高架彎道這些段落，導演是利用純粹的剪輯技法和拍攝技法來營造最屏氣凝神的緊張感，但是觀眾之所以能夠在特定段落提前進入屏氣凝神的狀態和心境，卻是與劇本上的扎實分不開的。
此片的劇本讓我想起了兩個很經典案例。一個是1957年Sidney Lumet導演，Reginald Rose編劇的《十二怒漢》。記得有一次參加一個編劇的交流會，曾經有人提到了該片。有一位很年輕的女孩兒當時說：「《十二怒漢》的劇情多簡單啊，單線索，三段式。」當時在座的所有人下巴都掉地上了。從格局上來看，《十二怒漢》卻是是很簡陋，96分鍾時間里有95分鍾都是在同一個屋子裡，同樣的12個人的對話。如此看來，本片的劇情用「單薄、單一、枯燥」等詞來形容一點兒都不為過。可是，本片高明之處，就在於每個角色的個性鮮明，並且通過言語和肢體上的交流，眾人的意識和觀點發生了漸進性的變化。以表決為標志，很明確地將這種遞進的層次感表現了出來。有這種標志和遞進感，即便影片是單一的線索，單一的場景，劇情上的張力也依然是層出不窮的。
另一個例子是大家所熟知的《阿凡達》。很多人都驚嘆於《阿凡達》的畫面表現力，而否定影片的故事的精彩。其實說實話，你回想一下，這部戲根本就沒什麼廢戲。影片里的很多看似很隨意的劇情，其實都擔負著引出畫面表現的任務。換言之，大家能夠這么沉浸在影片的畫面表現，不是因為影片用畫面征服你，而是先設計好圓順的故事情節，然後才把觀眾帶入到這種畫面里來享受的。對比《西風烈》，我們就能明白在畫面表現之前做好故事鋪墊是多麼重要。於是，《阿凡達》的劇本在人物上進行了弱化，在懸念上也進行了弱化，為的就是突出故事上的細節。我們可以看到，影片中屢次出現小起伏和小波折，而每次波折過後就會引出一段或華麗多彩或緊張窒息的視覺段子。
用了這么多話介紹了上面兩個例子，就是為了讓大家了解到，劇本的編寫往往是有一定的目的性的。如果枉顧目的性而執意要在劇本上做文章玩花樣，就會讓人頗為不理解。只有針對影片的目的採用合適的劇情模式才是最牛的。在這一點上，克里斯托弗-諾蘭是最被我所推崇的。回到本片來看，就是故事設計對主題的契合達到了相當高的高度。本片英文片名是「Unstoppable 」，給人一種宿命感。類型為動作驚悚片，主要目的是以驚險的動作場面為觀眾提供視聽上的沖擊。
為了實現「Unstoppable」的感覺，我們看到影片並沒有從一開始就把兩大主演，丹澤爾-華盛頓和克里斯-派恩與「溜車」的777號聯系在一起。其實這是稍微有違常規的。影片一共就這么兩個大牌，可是這兩人在前45分鍾里幾乎與主線劇情脫離，不僅與777沒有關系，還在1206上悠哉悠哉。看似浪費，其實是一個很妙的安排。我們看到，在本片中，火車不是像巴斯特-基頓的《將軍號》那樣是一個「大道具」，而是一個難以被征服的「野獸」。在整個拯救過程中，並不只是兩大主演的英勇表現，而是調動了多種營救方式。這些其它的營救方式是由主角外的其他人實施的。在兩大主演發威之前，已經實施四到五種「Stop」計劃，均以失敗告終。這樣反復實為，一來營造了多起緊張刺激的小高潮，二來從一個側面把777這兩列車塑造成了「有血有肉」的終極大Boss，為影片最後的高潮積攢了情緒上的力量。這種安排最讓我感到有新意的，是影片去掉了「英雄」。讓整個事件看上去更加可信，更加真實。在一場「Unstoppable」的災難面前，可絕不是天降英雄就能助黎民百姓擺脫死亡陰影的。這樣一種形勢，在配合上前40分鍾對兩大主演的淡化描寫，就更顯出了任務的艱巨，以及最後勝利後帶給人的欣慰。這演變成了一場眾人合力後，對怪獸的勝利。不過比較令人可惜的是，影片最最後的的解決方式讓人稍微有些脫力。前面去英雄化近80分鍾，等來的卻依舊是克里斯-派恩非常「英雄」的縱身一躍。不給力啊！不給力！
對於驚險的視聽沖擊，影片在劇情上也進行了極為厚實的輔助工作。大家可以回想一下，影片最給力、最驚險、最刺激的三五場動作戲，哪一場不是在之前的劇情里鋪墊了很多次的？影片從一開始出現危機狀況開始，以後方操控的三方勢力的不斷交流中，我們就提前預知了777號一路上可能會遇到的幾個危險階段。之後所有人的努力就是要讓危險不出現。於是乎，影迷心中的糾結便一直化不開了，這提及的危險地段，777是能到還是不能到，如果777真的到了，究竟是過得去還是過不去？在心情平靜的觀影前和觀影後，我們的理性會告訴自己，這些危險一定會來，如果不來還有啥看頭？這些危險地段777也一定能過去，否則結局如何收尾？但是，當你處於心情不平靜的觀影中時，誰還能理性地去想這些問題，當時是跟隨著劇情的引導去期待這些問題將會以一個什麼樣的具體畫面細節來表現。因此說，動作戲劇本最精彩的地方不在於你設計了什麼危險，設計了如何通過危險，而在於你如何引導觀眾去實現等待危險到來的心情。很顯然，《危情時速》在這方面的表現非常出色，甚至比那幾段動作戲的驚險效果還出色。
影片能夠兼顧高潮段落的驚險刺激和高潮前的逐層鋪墊，又能做到小高潮的豐富不間斷，就是是先了劇情上的豐滿。托尼-斯科特就是好萊塢電影人之所以能夠稱霸全球最好的例子，人家不求全，不求高深，不求大師稱號，就是扎扎實實地為影迷的觀影歷程著想，不僅要在大高潮小高潮的段落里用凌厲的剪輯和高成本的爆破沖擊觀眾的視聽感覺，還要在每一個高潮到來前給你做好心理上的鋪墊。這TMD才是好劇本，好導演！
