坦白來說，《瘋狂動物城》的譯名不算所有好萊塢電影中最差的。畢竟，還有《黃金三鏢客》、《刺激1995》、《美食總動員》等譯名界的奇葩墊底。但“瘋狂動物園”抹殺了英文名“Zootopia”中重要的隱含信息。在英文名中，“zoo”是動物園的意思，“topia”是希臘文中“地方”的詞根。這個希臘詞根經常出現在一個英文詞中：utopia，即“烏托邦”。因此，電影更准確的譯名應該是“動物托邦”。

作為“理想社會”的代名詞，“烏托邦”源於十六世紀英國學者托馬斯·摩爾的同名著作。在那本書中，摩爾虛構了一個擁有完美社會體制的小島，不但廢除私有制，而且實現了人人平等。在理想制度的保護下，小島上的居民充分享受自由。現實社會中的貧困與罪惡也不存在於這個小島。正當英國民眾對政壇紅人摩爾充滿希望時，他卻被好友亨利八世處決。
摩爾去世後，他的理想社會理念留存了下來。一批社會實踐者決定建立自己的烏托邦。英國商人羅伯特·歐文在美國建立了一個實驗性公社。然而，這個廢除了私有制的公社在兩年後失敗。如果考察公社的經濟基礎，它的失敗並不奇怪。兩年的時間里，公社並沒有什麼實質性的產出，主要依靠歐文自己的財產。這筆財富是歐文在英國的棉紡工廠賺來的。可以說，這個公社的經濟基礎正是烏托邦理念所反對的東西：工廠中的僱傭制、棉花地里的奴隸制、國際貿易中的殖民主義。公社的失敗在一開始就不可避免。
20世紀，“烏托邦”理想作為對資本的反擊，再次復活。蘇聯在國家層面上進行了一次更為宏大的社會實驗，用計劃經濟全面取代市場經濟。但也是在蘇聯的巔峰年代，反烏托邦理念抬頭。喬治·奧威爾創作的《動物農場》中，同樣用動物來寓言政治。領導革命的豬們掌握了權力。於是，原本朝著平等目標進發的動物農場衍生出新的等級。正如《動物農場》的預言，蘇聯的行政漸漸官僚化，經濟也一步步僵化。蘇聯最終解體。
《瘋狂動物園》中的“動物托邦”也是一個理想化的城市。所有動物不分種族的生活在一起，每個動物都能成為它想成為的樣子。但隨著劇情的進行，觀眾會發現“動物托邦”只是概念上的理想，遠非現實。“動物托邦”究竟是鼓勵性的“烏托邦”，還是諷刺性的“反烏托邦”，這是從電影名字開始就已經在探索的第一重內涵。
2. 成人愛童話
《瘋狂的動物園》並沒有停留在“烏托邦”這樣的抽象概念上。電影從一開始，就刻意影射現實。在最典型的一個橋段中，兔子急著到交通局查車牌號，交通局的辦事人員卻都是些行動遲緩的樹懶。小朋友們看到銀幕上的憨厚樹懶開心得哈哈大笑，但成人觀眾臉上全是苦笑：生活中拖沓的行政流程，大概比樹懶還要差勁。電影中的'物種沖突，也對應美國當下的種族沖突。動物城中處處有物種偏見：兔子不適合做警察，狐狸都是騙子，食草動物軟弱，食肉動物殘暴…… 同樣，美國也存在嚴重的種族偏見，總統候選人的川普就毫不掩飾自己的種族主義態度。可以說，《瘋狂的動物園》是一則關於現實的寓言。
寓言號稱“成人的童話”，往往用比喻來描述社會和人性。中國古典名著《西遊記》表面上是一個神怪故事，但內在同樣是一個寓言。猴王獨立而能幹，敢於大鬧天宮，推翻天庭秩序，經常被後世看做造反精神的一個體現。豬八戒不但懶惰怯懦，且貪於女色，象徵人性的弱點。寓言的間接比喻就像是留給讀者的一個小謎題，任由讀者自行發揮。就諷刺現實的目的來說，寓言更能網羅聽眾，其笑眯眯的諷刺效果反而好於直接抨擊。
但作為一則寓言，《瘋狂動物城》最想反對的，是寓言中常見的臉譜化解讀，比如獅子代表統治者、狐狸意味著狡猾。隨著劇情的發展，動物的真實性格總是背離對應的傳統臉譜。本應膽小的兔子卻勇敢熱血，本應狡猾的狐狸卻善良真誠。體形渺小的動物成了黑幫老大，體形碩大的動物卻是小馬仔。片中的大反派更是出人意表。用寓言來解讀現實，用反臉譜來反對種族主義，是電影的第二重深意。
3. 文化改變世界
在電影的最後，重歸和平的動物城舉行了一場演唱會。超級巨星羚羊在台上唱了一首“嘗試一切”(Try Everything)。這首歌正符合畫外音在說明的電影主題：每種動物都有缺陷，但這不應是物種間的鴻溝。想要跨越物種差異，唯一的辦法是努力嘗試，不放棄交流。伴隨著音樂，不同動物在舞台下攜手起舞。迪斯尼電影標志性的歡樂嘉年華氣氛終於在這場一夜狂歡中回歸。導演選擇了文化性的歌手來作為消弭裂痕的最終手段，看似牽強，實則已有先例。
1960年代，由於種族沖突、女權運動和越戰等問題，美國社會陷入分裂。正當大眾對前途感到迷茫時，披頭士樂隊的主唱約翰·列儂更是以和平主義代言人的身份，直接介入美國的主流文化。他的《給和平一個機會》被看做是反戰的聖歌。超過十萬的學生聚集在華盛頓，高聲齊唱：
All we are saying is give peace a chance
(我們說給和平一個機會)
這次反戰運動讓尼克松政府壓力巨大，最終促成了美國從越南戰場的撤軍。列儂的歌無疑是民間運動的產物，但它又反過來進一步促進了反戰運動，成為軟文化改變硬世界的一個案例。列儂的文化力量是借著現代的傳媒手段獲得的。《瘋狂動物城》中的羚羊，是動畫世界的列儂，代表了動物們跨越物種偏見的希望。
同樣，迪士尼在美國大選年推出一部寓言色彩濃烈的《瘋狂動物城》，用意並不簡單。現在的美國正如六十年代，面臨著嚴重的分裂危機。恐怖襲擊異化了阿拉伯裔族群，經濟衰退導致外來移民飽受攻訐。川普在大選中的囂張，更讓少數族裔感到惶恐。在這樣的環境下，抱著“種族融合”理念的《瘋狂動物園》走上銀屏，就像污濁中的一股清風。至於《瘋狂動物城》能否成為一個改變世界的文化圖騰，是我期待在未來解讀的第三重內涵。

So it's true!
Mulan:

Chi Fu:

Shang:

The Chinese Army sadly walks away, leaving Mulan, Mushu, and Khan in the snow.
