我在非完全主動的情況下在北京最好的電影院里看完了《角鬥士》。所謂非主動觀賞，完全在於我對這類影片題材的不感冒，確切講，是有心理障礙。無論是十幾年前看的《斯巴達克思》，還是更早的、在奧斯卡電影史上永留青名、我卻至今沒看過的《賓虛》。所有描寫古羅馬時期奴隸生活或以此為背景的影片我都不看。因為我受不了那種野蠻血腥的色調。不知道為什麼，也不知道從什麼時候開始，所有這類影片在我心裡都是一種昏黃的、壓抑的、毫無希望的色調。也許你在片中看不到血，但那種壓迫會時時追隨著你。在一片煙塵火色中，人與人毫無選擇的角斗。那裡象是永遠也見不到自由的陽光的。而在看完這部影片後我發現，我看到的都是美國人的古羅馬，我從不知道，羅馬人眼裡的古羅馬是什麼樣的。
隨著電影科技的成熟，你不能不承認《角鬥士》這部影片較以前的可看性要強，要更成熟和完美。但你也不得不感受更多更濃烈的美國味。
盡管主人公將軍是個西班牙農民，整天念叨著打完仗該回家收麥子了，而且數得出離開家的時間，但他對待士兵、對待愛他的公主、對待把他當兒子一樣看待的愷撒的態度，以及對家中妻兒的思念都是美國式的人性——其實這種處理方式本身就是美國式的。
愷撒殘忍的兒子繼位後為討好人民而舉行慶典，在大競技場里觀看角鬥士角斗。多象美國的大選呀。角鬥士的主人對主人公馬克西莫司說：贏得人民就是贏得自由。套在美國大選里不就是：贏得人民就是贏得選票嗎。
還有政治，我不了解那時的政治是什麼樣的，但影片里的種種斗爭和手段，甚至種種情節轉化都是熟悉的，因為那是在很多美國片中常常看到的。
因為勇敢、智慧和善良而被公主愛，因為勇敢、智慧和善良而即使在角鬥士的隊伍里也被擁戴為首領，有人甘願為他犧牲，甚至連一個8歲的孩子（偏巧他還是公主的兒子）也會一眼識別他的與眾不同甚至崇拜他到希望長大成為角鬥士。
但英雄是必須要死的，這樣才符合美國式是真實。但死也要在伸張了正義後，盡管是從一個西班牙農民的復仇升華為為拯救古羅馬而必須要伸張的正義。所以，即使身遭暗算，也會憑借一股「血戰到底」的精神——一定是精神——戰到最後，替人民贏得勝利，也為自己。然後，光榮而滿足的死去，並得到民族英雄般的厚葬。
而且，曾經因為時世所迫背叛過他的部下，也往往會在最後、最緊要的關頭助一臂之力。
這一切，你是不是特別熟悉呢？

夢工廠的技術和藝術製造出的很多鏡頭是相當完美的，比如片中反復出現的馬克西莫司瀕死狀態下，存在他潛意識里的美麗家鄉和可愛妻兒，象雲一樣流動的鏡頭和灰藍的色調就是一個完美的夢。可除了這些呢？
